EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY & LEARNING

About

Horses have long been a human companion, work ally and friend.  Originally prey animals living in herds they constantly observe and react to their environment and naturally respond to the emotions and behaviour of others .  Seeking safety and forming social bonds is paramount for their survival.  Horses emotional sensitivity and capacity to connect enables them to provide a powerful therapeutic space for reflection and healing and an alternative to conventional room-based therapies.

Equine assisted therapy has been evidenced in the treatment of Trauma and PTSD and addiction. It is also known to support and engage adults, children and adolescence with a range of mental health difficulties including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety, Complex Trauma and Eating Disorders.

How can the horses help

Sessions will orientate around the relationship that develops between horses and clients. Sometimes it is easier to relate to and connect with a 'non-human' other when there has been hurt or mistrust in our relationships. There are times with the horses when we are also faced with fear and frustration.

Horses are permissive of all feelings and do not hold grudges, and this can help us to feel and process emotions and move on. Raising awareness of emotions and behaviours that arise in sessions is a powerful in road into how we relate to others and live our own lives.
